Psalm 132

Psalm 132- A Song of Ascents. 1 Yahweh, remember David and all his afflictions; 2 how he swore to Yahweh, and vowed to the Mighty One of Jacob: 3 “Surely I will not go into the chamber of my house, or go up to the comfort of my bed; 4 I will not give sleep to my eyes or slumber to my eyelids, 5 until I find a place for Yahweh, a dwelling place for the Mighty One of Jacob.” 6 Behold, we heard of it in Ephrathah; we found it in the fields of the woods. 7 Let us go into His tabernacle; let us worship at His footstool. 8 Arise, Yahweh, to Your resting place, You and the ark of Your strength. 9 Let Your priests be clothed with righteousness, and let Your saints shout for joy. 10 For Your servant David’s sake, do not turn away the face of Your Anointed.

“This is Israel’s national processional, in which the journey of the Ark of the Covenant from Mount Sinai to Mount Zion is seen as symbolizing the march of God to ultimate victory…. [in Christ] The sight of the sacred chest under way suggested the time when God arises to action. For His enemies it means disaster and dispersal; for the righteous, deep-seated joy.” (Believer’s Commentary) “‘Yahweh, remember David’— as Moses prayed (Exo 32:13), ‘Remember Abraham,’ the first trustee of the covenant. ‘And all his afflictions’; all the troubles of his life… Remember all his humility and weakness, so some read it; all that pious and devout affection with which he had made the following vow.” (Matthew Henry)— “‘how he swore to Yahweh, and vowed to “the Mighty One of Jacob”— the patriarch and “father of vows…” (Abraham Wright), having made the first biblical vow (Gen 28) David now vowed, “Surely I will not go into the chamber of my house, or go up to the comfort of my bed; I will not give sleep to my eyes or slumber to my eyelids, until I find a place for Yahweh, a dwelling place for the Mighty One of Jacob.” He had built a house for himself to live in, but here he vowed not to “bless it (1Ch 16:43), nor consequently live in it… until he had first prepared a place, and brought up the ark to it…. being troubled to think of the magnificence of his own house, while the ark was but in a tent.” (Henry Hammond)

“'Behold,’ says Israel in refrain ‘we heard of it’— the project— ’in Ephrathah;”— The poet makes them say, identifying themselves with the people of those distant times, while naturally the historical correctness suffers, ‘We heard his project at Bethlehem; we found out (mâtsâ) its meaning (saw it take shape) in the woods (at Kirjath-jearim).’ For mâtsâ, in the sense of ‘finding out the meaning or discerning,’ see Judges 14:12, ‘of a riddle.’” (C. J. Ellicott) “’Let us go into His tabernacle;’ so called in the days of Israel’s sojourn in the wilderness of Judah. “‘Let us worship at His footstool.’ (6) The earth was so called in Isaiah 66:1. And particularly here, it was in David’s heart to build a house as a resting place for the ark of the covenant of the LORD— called a footstool by David in 1 Chronicles 28:2-3— “to lift His people heavenward,” (John Trapp) signifying that “all religious, spiritual, and evangelic worship, is to be performed in His name, and in the faith of Him, and by the assistance of His grace and Spirit.” (John Gill) There will come a day when Christ’s enemies will be made His footstool, returning to the dust of the earth from whence they came.

“‘Arise, Yahweh, to Your resting place,’ The staves were drawn out from the Ark when it was deposited in the Temple. In Christ there is finality; He is Omega, the Last.” (F. B. Meyers) It had been movable; “so, till we come to heaven.” (Trapp)— “You and the Ark of Your strength’ When they were faithful, Yahweh went with the ark as they carried it about. Thus: "At the passage of the Jordan, no sooner were the feet of the priests which bare this holy vessel dipped in the brim of the river, than the waters rose up upon an heap, and the people of God passed over on dry ground—‘clean over Jordan:’... At the siege of Jericho, the ark occupied a most prominent position in the daily procession of the tribes around the doomed city... [Yet in times of disobedience, the ark meant nothing] It was… captured by the Philistines, and Hophni and Phineas, Eli's wicked sons, in whose care it was placed, slain. Thus the Lord ‘delivered His strength into captivity and Hiis glory into the enemy's hand.’” (Frank H. White)

“‘Let Your priests'- Your spiritual sons of Aaron- 'be clothed with righteousness,’ Job says, I put on righteousness and it clothed me… Patriarchs and priests were splendidly arrayed when they officiated at the altar, which suggested the fine idea of moral glory, as the costume of the mind, or the putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, and putting on the Lord Jesus Christ, of whose glory the highpriest’s garments were a figure.” (Joseph Sutcliffe)— “Holiness on the head, Light and perfections on the breast, Harmonious bells below, raising the dead; To lead them unto life and rest. Thus are true Aarons drest, etc.” (George Herbert) — ‘“’and let Your saints’— the workers or Levites, that is "true believers under the Gospel dispensation” (John Gill) — ‘shout for joy in the temple’ “For Your servant David’s sake, ‘do not turn away the face of Your Annointed’. This "did prefigure the great Christian plea, ‘For Christ Jesus' sake;’ just as God's selection of individual men and making them centres of revelation and religion, in the old time; prefigured ‘the Man Christ Jesus’ as the centre and basis of religion for all time. Hence in the plea, ‘For Christ's sake,’ the old pleas referred to are abolished, as the Jewish ritual is abolished. Christ bids us use His name: John 14:13-14; John 16:26, etc. To believe the false notions mentioned above, or to trust in any other name for divine, gracious favour, is to dishonour the name of Christ. 'For Christ's sake’ is effective on account of the great covenant, the merits of Christ, and His session in heaven.” (John Field of Sevenoaks) as the Great Apostle and Highpriest of our profession.

11 Yahweh has sworn in truth to David; He will not turn from it: “I will set upon your throne the fruit of your body. 12 If your sons will keep My covenant and My testimony which I shall teach them, their sons also shall sit upon your throne forevermore.” 13 For Yahweh has chosen Zion; He has desired it for His dwelling place: 14 “This is My resting place forever; here I will dwell, for I have desired it. 15 I will abundantly bless her provision; I will satisfy her poor with bread. 16 I will also clothe her priests with salvation, and her saints shall shout aloud for joy. 17 There I will make the horn of David grow; I will prepare a lamp for My Anointed. 18 His enemies I will clothe with shame, but upon Himself His crown shall flourish.”

“Yahweh has sworn in truth to David; He will not turn from it: ‘I will set upon your throne the fruit of your body.’ When David’s mind “was depressed at not being allowed to build the temple, the Lord promised him a glory infinitely better; namely, that he should be, in his posterity, the father of the Messiah, who should sit upon the throne for ever. Here is a promise in which no condition is named. 2 Samuel 7:12. BUT WITH HIS POSTERITY, THE LORD SPEAKS OTHERWISE: If thy children will keep my covenant, they also shall sit upon thy throne for ever—if not, if they refuse and rebel, I will cast them off for ever. 1 Samuel 2:30. 1 Chronicles 28:9.” (Joseph Sutcliffe) “The kingdom of Judah might have stood to this day had its kings been faithful to Jehovah. No internal revolt or external attack could have overthrown the royal house of David: it fell by its own sin, and by nothing else.” (C. H. Spurgeon) "This principle is universal.” (Albert Barnes) "‘Unto him that overcomes will I grant to sit with Me upon My throne in My kingdom, even as I have overcome, and have sat down with My Father on His throne’ (Revelation 3:21 ).” (Chuck Smith)

“‘For Yahweh has chosen Zion’ as the seat of His religion. ‘He has desired it for His dwelling place… the permanent place of His worship. This is my rest for ever - My home; my permanent abode. I will no more remove from place to place - as when the ark was carried in the wilderness, and as it has been since; but Zion shall now be the fixed seat of religion. Here will I dwell … - Permanently; constantly.” (Barnes) “The Lord having chosen His church, resteth in His love to her: He smelleth a sweet savour of Christ, and this maketh His seat among His people steadfast.” (Dickson)

From the resting place of Ark- “I will abundantly bless the church's provision, by supplying her temporal needs in rich measure; ‘I will satisfy her poor with bread.’ (15) This may refer also to spiritual blessings, as the next verse does with express words.” (Paul E. Kretzmann) "I will also clothe her priests with salvation, and her saints shall shout aloud for joy. There I will make the horn of David grow.’ (16-17) The ‘horn of David’ that God promised would spring forth refers to a ruler that He would raise up from David’s descendants (cf. Daniel 7:24; Luke 1:69).— ‘I will prepare a lamp for My Anointed.’ The ‘lamp’ is a figure for a leader (cf. 2 Samuel 21:17; 1 Kings 11:36). It refers to the same Person God said He would prepare for His anointed, David. In other words, God promised to raise up one of David"s descendants who would defeat His enemies. This promise found partial fulfillment in some of David’s successors who followed him on the throne of Israel, but Messiah will fulfill it ultimately (cf. Isaiah 4:2; Jeremiah 23:5; Jeremiah 33:15; Zechariah 3:18; Zechariah 6:12).” (Dr. Thomas B. Constable) “‘His enemies will I clothe with shame’— Shame shall be the promotion of all such fools as set against Christ and His people; yea, they shall be clothed with it; so that it shall be conspicuous to all men.— “’But upon Himself His crown shall flourish.’— His royal diadem, whereby He is separated (Nezer) and distinguished from other men.” (John Trapp) He is Yahweh from heaven- Very God of very God
