Evening Repost: Exodus 26: The Inner Curtains of the Tent

1 Moreover you shall make the tabernacle with ten curtains of fine woven linen and blue, purple, and scarlet thread; with artistic designs of cherubim you shall weave them. 2 The length of each curtain shall be twenty-eight cubits, and the width of each curtain four cubits. And every one of the curtains shall have the same measurements. 3 Five curtains shall be coupled to one another, and the other five curtains shall be coupled to one another. 4 And you shall make loops of blue yarn on the edge of the curtain on the selvedge of one set, and likewise you shall do on the outer edge of the other curtain of the second set. 5 Fifty loops you shall make in the one curtain, and fifty loops you shall make on the edge of the curtain that is on the end of the second set, that the loops may be clasped to one another. 6 And you shall make fifty clasps of gold, and couple the curtains together with the clasps, so that it may be one tabernacle.

The sacred furniture in the holy place "having been described, with the exception of the 'altar of incense' the description of which is reserved for ch 30. -directions were next given for the sacred structure itself.” (Pulpit Commentary) "The Dwelling-Place... was to be formed of a framework of wood, and of tapestry and curtains. The description commences with the tapestry or tent-cloth (Exodus 26:1-14), which made the framework (vv. 15-30) into a dwelling. The inner lining is mentioned first (Exodus 26:1-6), because this made the dwelling into a tent (tabernacle). This inner tent-cloth was to consist of ten curtains (יריעת, αὐλαίαι ), or, as Luther has more aptly rendered it, Teppiche, pieces of tapestry, i.e., of cloth composed of byssus yarn, hyacinth, purple, and scarlet. משׁזר twisted, signifies yarn composed of various colours twisted together, from which the finer kinds of byssus, for which the Egyptians were so celebrated, were made (vid., Hengstenberg, Egypt)..." "We are to notice in this chapter, that as the tabernacle was to be often removed from place to place, especially while the Israelites sojourned in the wilderness, it was made in such a manner as to be easily taken to pieces and put together again.” (Sutcliffe Commentary)

"Moreover you shall make the tabernacle (המשׁכן hammishchan)” "The word… which we translate tabernacle, means a place to dwell in. And this was not only to be a sign of God’s presence with, and protection of his people, but his habitation or dwelling-place among them: the place where he would, in a peculiar manner, manifest his presence, display his glory, accept their oblations, prayers, praises, and other services, and by the intervention of Moses and Aaron first, and afterward of the high-priest for the time being, would communicate to them his mind and will. 'It was a type,' says Mr. Brown, '1st, Of Christ’s person, Hebrews 8:2. 2d, Of the gospel church; the habitation of God by the Spirit, Ephesians 2:20-22; 2 Corinthians 6:16. 3d, Of every Christian, in whose heart God dwells, 1 Corinthians 3:16; 1 Corinthians 6:19. 4th, Of the new covenant and heavenly state, Isaiah 66:1. And according to these different significations may the furniture thereof be understood in different views.’

With ten curtains — These curtains formed the principal covering of the sanctuary, and are called the tabernacle or dwelling-place of God. They were made of the finest linen, dyed with the richest colours, spun and woven in the most curious manner, and beautifully embroidered all over with cherubim, the emblematic representations of angels. This last circumstance was not only intended to signify that the angels joined in the worship of the God of Israel; but also that they attend continually upon him in his holy habitation as 'his ministers to do his pleasure,' Psalm 103:21; that they encamp around his church, Psalm 34:7; and are always in waiting, so to speak, and ready to minister to the heirs of salvation, Hebrews 1:14. For, as there were cherubim over the mercy- seat, so there were also round the tabernacle... This tabernacle was very straight and narrow, but at the preaching of the gospel the church is bid to enlarge the place of her tent, and to stretch forth her curtains, Isaiah 54:2.” ” (Benson Commentary)

"'Sing, O barren, you who have not borne! Break forth into singing, and cry aloud, you who have not labored with child! For more are the children of the desolate than the children of the married woman,' says the Lord. 'Enlarge the place of your tent, snd let them stretch out the curtains of your dwellings; do not spare; lengthen your cords, and strengthen your stakes. For you shall expand to the right and to the left, and your descendants will inherit the nations, and make the desolate cities inhabited." (Isaiah 54:1-3)

And the separate sections of the curtain were to be clasp together by fifty clasps of gold, representing deity. The great hymn of the faith says it best:

"The Church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord. She is His new creation by water and the Word. From heaven He came and sought her to be His holy bride; with His own blood He bought her and for her life He died.

She is from every nation, yet one o’er all the earth; her charter of salvation,

One Lord, one faith, one birth; One holy Name she blesses, partakes one holy food, and to one hope she presses, with every grace endued.

The Church shall never perish! Her dear Lord to defend, to guide, sustain, and cherish, is with her to the end: though there be those who hate her, and false sons in her pale, against both foe or traitor she ever shall prevail.”

Exodus 26: Outer Covering of Goat's Hair

7 You shall also make curtains of goats’ hair, to be a tent over the tabernacle. You shall make eleven curtains. 8 The length of each curtain shall be thirty cubits, and the width of each curtain four cubits; and the eleven curtains shall all have the same measurements. 9 And you shall couple five curtains by themselves and six curtains by themselves, and you shall double over the sixth curtain at the forefront of the tent. 10 You shall make fifty loops on the edge of the curtain that is outermost in one set, and fifty loops on the edge of the curtain of the second set. 11 And you shall make fifty bronze clasps, put the clasps into the loops, and couple the tent together, that it may be one. 12 The remnant that remains of the curtains of the tent, the half curtain that remains, shall hang over the back of the tabernacle. 13 And a cubit on one side and a cubit on the other side, of what remains of the length of the curtains of the tent, shall hang over the sides of the tabernacle, on this side and on that side, to cover it.

"These coarse curtains were to be one more in number than the others, and to extend a yard lower on each side, the use of them being to protect and conceal the richer curtains." (Jamieson-Fausset-Brown)

"The curtains of meaner materials, being made both longer and broader, covered the others, and were defended by coverings of skins. The whole represents the person and doctrine of Christ, and the church of true Christians, and all heavenly things, which outwardly are mean, but inwardly, and in the sight of God, are glorious and precious." "Taches of brass — Corresponding with the goats’ hair, as gold with the fine linen. Exodus 26:6... The fifty gold clasps represented deity, but the bronze ones judgment and death- for us deserving but for Christ atoning."The tabernacle was goats’ hair without, and gold within. God hid his Son under the carpenter’s son. 'The king’s daughter is all glorious within.' [Psalms 45:13] And all her sons are princes in all lands. [Psalms 45:16] Howbeit, they must be content to pass to heaven as Christ their Head did, as concealed men. 'Therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew not him.' [John 1:10] 'Our life is hid with Christ,' [Colossians 3:4] as the life of flowers in winter is hid in the root." (Trapp Complete Commentary)

Morning Repost: Exodus 26: The Roof for the Holy Place

14 You shall also make a covering of ram skins dyed red for the tent, and a covering of badger skins above that.

"Shadowing out God’s protecting his people, [Isaiah 4:6; Isaiah 25:4; Psalms 27:5] as these rams’ skins covered the ark from the violence of wind and weather.” (Trapp) Over the Holy of Holies and the Holy Place "was a covering of rams’ skins dyed red. Beautiful emblem of the protecting blood of Christ. ABOVE the covering of rams’ skins dyed red was a covering of badgers’ skins. These skins were probably dyed blue. Perhaps a part were dyed purple. If so there would be seen on the outside, as well as the inside, 'the blue, purple, and scarlet.' This outside covering teaches us that the Church is under the protection of heaven. The blue skins were over the red skins. Heaven only protects the blood marked. 'Kept by the power of God.' (R. E. Sears.)” (Biblical Illustrator)

"AND BADGER’S SKINS, which were for the same use: the Septuagint version calls them hyacinth or blue skins; according to which, they seem to be the rams' skins died blue; and so Josephus seems to have understood it; and it is much questionable whether the same creature is meant we call the badger, since that with the Israelites was an unclean creature." "Is not the wonderful exactness here shown to those minute circumstances, intended to manifest how, even to the smallest matters, the Lord regards his Church and people: Matthew 6:25-30.” (Hawker) YET HERE "The size of these two coverings is not mentioned, nor how they were made, but they no doubt covered the others over completely. [It speaks of the mystery of Christ.] The covering of rams' skins dyed red speaks of the sacrifice of Christ, not from the viewpoint of substitution, but from that of redemption. For Christ's sacrifice was not only for the sake of substituting for us, but for the glory of God. The ram speaks of His willing devotion to God in His sacrifice, and being dyed red reminds us that the shedding of His blood was absolutely essential to satisfy the righteous claims of God against our sins. By that sacrifice we are redeemed to God (Rev 5:9). [THESE SKINS]... would be drab and unattractive to the eye. Yet this covering speaks of Christ also, as the others do. It reminds us of Isaiah 53:2: 'And when we see Him, there is no beauty that we should desire Him.' This was true of Israel's response when the Messiah came to them, and it is true of all classes of people everywhere. In their first view of the Lord Jesus they see nothing to attract them. There must be a work of the Spirit of God to open their eyes to see far more in Him than appears at first sight.” (L. M. Grant)

Those who came inside saw the lining "made of the finest linen, dyed with the richest colours, spun and woven in the most curious manner, and beautifully embroidered all over with cherubim, the emblematic representations of angels." THUS: "The joys of God’s presence are a secret known only to those who (1) take action against sin, and then(2) enter into the place of dependence. This dull- on-the-outside-beautiful-on- the-inside secret is visualized by the design of the tabernacle. Outwardly, the Holy Place looked uninviting. The exterior was draped with drab-looking animal skins. The interior, however, was rich with color, embroidery, and gold. In this way the tabernacle told the story experienced by everyone who by faith comes into the presence of God.

To the outsider, the godly life doesn’t look appealing. But to the person who gratefully shows faith in the God of his salvation by separating from sin and by obediently entering into the holy place, there is a wonderful discovery. Exodus 26: The Wooden Frame With Metals of Silver and Gold

15 And for the tabernacle you shall make the boards of acacia wood, standing upright. 16 Ten cubits shall be the length of a board, and a cubit and a half shall be the width of each board. 17 Two tenons shall be in each board for binding one to another. Thus you shall make for all the boards of the tabernacle. 18 And you shall make the boards for the tabernacle, twenty boards for the south side. 19 You shall make forty sockets of silver under the twenty boards: two sockets under each of the boards for its two tenons. 20 And for the second side of the tabernacle, the north side, there shall be twenty boards 21 and their forty sockets of silver: two sockets under each of the boards. 22 For the far side of the tabernacle, westward, you shall make six boards. 23 And you shall also make two boards for the two back corners of the tabernacle. 24 They shall be coupled together at the bottom and they shall be coupled together at the top by one ring. Thus it shall be for both of them. They shall be for the two corners. 25 So there shall be eight boards with their sockets of silver—sixteen sockets—two sockets under each of the boards.

26 And you shall make bars of acacia wood: five for the boards on one side of the tabernacle, 27 five bars for the boards on the other side of the tabernacle, and five bars for the boards of the side of the tabernacle, for the far side westward. 28 The middle bar shall pass through the midst of the boards from end to end. 29 You shall overlay the boards with gold, make their rings of gold as holders for the bars, and overlay the bars with gold. 30 And you shall raise up the tabernacle according to its pattern which you were shown on the mountain.

“The tabernacle, from its name as well as from its general appearance and arrangements, was a tent; but from the description given in these verses, the boards that formed its walls, the five (cross) bars that strengthened them, and the middle bar that 'reached from end to end,' and gave it solidity and compactness, it was evidently a more substantial fabric than a light and fragile tent, probably on account of the weight of its various coverings as well as for the protection of its precious furniture.” (Jamieson, Fausset and Brown) "But the builders of the gospel church said, silver and gold have we none; and yet the glory of their building far exceeded that of the tabernacle. St. Paul, probably, alludes to this tabernacle, with its pillars and sockets, when he terms the church the pillar and ground (εδραιωμα, seat rather) of the truth, 1 Timothy 3:15. As beauty and strength were united in the tabernacle, so they are in the church of Christ: 'beauty, which renders it the admiration of angels; and strength, which defies all the malice of devils.’” (Benson Commentary)

"Each board of shittim wood, overlaid with gold, seems to pourtray the Lord Jesus Himself, the Son of God, the Son of Man. The shittim wood…being a shadow of that great truth, that He 'partook of flesh and blood'; 'the seed of the woman'; 'the Second Man'; 'from heaven'; yet 'the Son of David'; 'of the fruit of His loins'; and at the same time 'the Son of the Highest'; born of the Virgin, 'the Man Christ Jesus'; made 'in the likeness of sinful flesh'; though, unlike any other man that ever lived on earth, incorrupt and incorruptible; having a body prepared for Him by God, in order that He might die; but without taint of mortality or death in Him. The gold also presents the other great truth, that He is 'the mighty God'; 'the brightness of God's glory'; 'the only begotten of the Father'; 'the Son' from everlasting, and to everlasting.” (H. W. Two silver sockets in the bottom of each board to receive the two tenons for binding one to another— "Silver symbolizes redemption… All the tabernacle rests upon silver except the hangings of the gate, the way of access. See Scofield Exodus 27:17." (Scofield Study Bible) Jesus said: “'Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. et they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.’ Jesus used this illustration, but they did not understand the things which He spoke to them." (John 10:1-6) Those who enter through the gate are united by redemption of grace. Those who climb over are attempting to save themselves.

Silver thus "formed a continuous foundation for the board structure, and would serve to separate and keep the lower ends of the boards from the ground.” (Whedon Commentary)… and thus corruption.

"The tabernacle's foundation was silver - pointing to the redeeming work of Jesus Christ… The silver of redemption also separated the tabernacle from the dirt of the desert floor. This is an illustration of the truth that Jesus' redeeming work separates us from the world.” (David Guzik)

“Coupled together at the top by one ring: Each board was joined together by a system of tenons (tabs) with rings, through which ran bars. Each board had four rings through which the bars ran, and the corner boards had eight rings, four on two sides to accommodate the corners.” (Guzik) "Bars of acacia wood— These were evidently rods that the priests threaded through the boards, or perhaps through rings attached to the boards, horizontally to give the boards stability and to hold them upright. They may have had significance to the Israelites, which some commentators have speculated upon, or they may have simply served a practical purpose.” (Constable)

"In all this it was a type of the church of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief Corner-stone, Eph 2:20,21.” (Matthew Henry)

Evening Repost: Exodus 26: The Second Veil Between Heaven and Earth

31 You shall make a veil woven of blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and fine woven linen. It shall be woven with an artistic design of cherubim. 32 You shall hang it upon the four pillars of acacia wood overlaid with gold. Their hooks shall be gold, upon four sockets of silver. 33 And you shall hang the veil from the clasps. Then you shall bring the ark of the Testimony in there, behind the veil. The veil shall be a divider for you between the holy place and the Most Holy.

"The veil was to be of the same material and workmanship as the inner covering extended over the mishkan (tabernacle), and like that, was to have figures of cherubim woven into its texture by a skilled weaver.” (Pulpit Commentary)-- signifying Divine Protection for all seekers. "The colors: blue, purple, and scarlet appear three times in this chapter: (1) in the inner covering of linen; (2) in this veil; and (3) in the screen at the entrance. That they carry a weight of symbolism is certain. Unger pointed out that: 'Blue signifies Christ's heavenly origin. Purple suggests his royal lineage as David's Son. Scarlet indicates his sacrificial blood shed for fallen mankind.’” (Coffman) We must understand these precepts to progress each step.

The curtains were the same as the inner curtain of the Tabernacle -at-large. So just as seeking God is an act of grace to all mankind, not of works- so was movement from the Holy Place to the Most Holy. This progress “is often considered in the New Testament as a figure of heaven, into which Christ is entered as our forerunner, and whither our hope extends, Hebrews 6:19-20; Hebrews 9:11; Hebrews 9:24; Hebrews 10:19.” (Benson) AND "The apostle tells what was the meaning of this veil, Heb 9:8. That the ceremonial law could not make the comers thereunto perfect, nor would the observance of it bring men to heaven; the way into the holiest of all was not made manifest, while the first tabernacle was standing. Life and immortality lay hidden till they were brought to light by the gospel; which was signified by the rending of this veil at the death of Christ, Mt 27:51. We have now boldness to enter into the holiest, in all acts of worship, by the blood of Jesus; yet such as obliges us to holy reverence.” (Matthew Henry)

"The torn veil of Matthew 27:51 also symbolizes the broken body of Jesus, through which we have access to the Most Holy Place.” (David Guzik) "Now the Most Holy Place is open to us: brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is His flesh." (Heb 10:19-20).

34 You shall put the mercy seat upon the ark of the Testimony in the Most Holy. 35 You shall set the table outside the veil, and the lampstand across from the table on the side of the tabernacle toward the south; and you shall put the table on the north side.

Make all of the means of grace available to believers and let the Spirit work. The Ark in Holy of Holies represented the throne of God. Put the Mercy Seat on the Ark, made of beaten gold-- a picture of Jesus. Moreover, establish a place for grace for believers - the Holy Place. "The furniture in the holy place spoke of three great obligations of walking with God: prayer (the altar of incense), fellowship (the table of showbread), and to receive illumination (the lamp stand).” (Guzik) "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." (Psalm 119:105)

But even with all the means of grace, it will not be until one turns to the Lord that the veil be taken away— and the scales will fall from their eyes so that they can see and enter therein by the blood of Jesus.

Evening Repost: Exodus 26: The First Veil

36 You shall make a screen for the door of the tabernacle, woven of blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and fine woven linen, made by a weaver. 37 And you shall make for the screen five pillars of acacia wood, and overlay them with gold; their hooks shall be gold, and you shall cast five sockets of bronze for them.

"This may be called the first veil, as it occupied the door or entrance to the tabernacle; the veil that separated the holy place from the holy of holies is called the second veil, Hebrews 9:3. These two veils and the inner covering of the tabernacle were all of the same materials, and of the same workmanship...” (Adam Clarke)

Both veils were to "have figures of cherubim woven into its texture by a skilled weaver.” (Pulpit Commentary)-- signifying Divine Protection. Both veils had colored threads interwoven into them. "Blue signifies Christ's heavenly origin. Purple suggests his royal lineage as David's Son. Scarlet indicates his sacrificial blood shed for fallen mankind." (Unger)

Moreover, both veils are fine twined linen.

"One material only is specified in the construction of the Vail, 'fine linen': the blue, purple, and scarlet, were simply colors. Upon this ground-work of fine linen these colors were displayed so that the observer would be first arrested by the beauty of the blue, the depth of the purple, and the brilliancy of the scarlet, before he perceived the material, over which these tints were spread. Does not this aptly exemplify that wondrous truth, 'God was manifest in the flesh?' 'The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us; and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only-begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.'

The Wife, in Rev. 19:7, is represented as having made herself ready for the marriage supper, and it is added in the succeeding verse, 'To her was granted, that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean, and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.' ver. 8. Here a twofold, yet united, aspect of the truth is beautifully presented: the Church makes herself ready, and yet she is clothed by another. So in Rev. 7;14, believers are said to have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb: while, in chap. i. 5, it is written 'Unto Him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in His own blood.' We may view the saint as clothing or washing himself; for he may be regarded as, by faith, appropriating to himself the precious blood of Christ; or, we may consider the work as all accomplished for him by the Lord Jesus, through the grace and mercy of God. The word 'righteousness of Saints' is remarkable, being in the plural number; it may be rendered righteousnesses;' the fine linen displaying every form of bright and holy purity; righteousness in every aspect; according to that beautiful word 'Thou art all fair, my love: there is no spot in thee.' But whence were these garments derived? If we turn to Jer. 23:6, 'This is His name, whereby He shall be called, Jehovah our Righteousness.' Jehovah Jesus is the righteousness of the saints. He is the spotless robe; they are clothed with Him; they stand accepted (graced) in the Beloved. God has made Him to be unto them 'righteousness, sanctification, and redemption,' and His name is placed upon them; as, in Jer. 33:16, Jerusalem on earth will have 'Jehovah our Righteousness' as the name whereby she shall be called.

The fine linen of the Vail seems, then, especially to present to us 'the Righteous One,' who in His life of toil and sorrow, and most especially in His death of shame and suffering, manifested that unsullied purity, that perfect obedience, and that delight in accomplishing the will of His Father, whereby He has earned for Himself a name, which is above every name, the name of Jesus; 'who was made sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.'" We have gold representing the deity of Jesus and brass sockets representing the continued risk of judgment. In the parable of the wedding feast, all guest were supplied with a wedding garment. “But when the king came in to see the guests, he saw a man there who did not have on a wedding garment. So he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' For many are called, but few are chosen.” (Matt 22:11-14)

I have decided that it might be this veil that symbolizes the mysteries of the O.T. The purpose of the veil was to hide, to conceal, as described by Paul. Human works would not suffice and human reasoning alone was insufficient. It is with every unregenerate man or woman as it was with many Jews in the day of Jesus: "But their minds were blinded. For until this day the same veil remains unlifted in the reading of the Old Testament, because the veil is taken away in Christ. But even to this day, when Moses is read, a veil lies on their heart. Nevertheless when one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away." (2 Corinthians 3:14-16)

It is within the Holy Place that the mysteries are revealed and we dressed for the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. Prayer (altar of incense), the communion of the saints (showbread), and private as well as corporate feasting on the Word of God (by the lampstand of gold), as well as preaching, prepare us for glory. Lord Jesus: "May it be my happiness never to read or hear of this Jewish tabernacle, without always being enabled by the Holy Ghost, to connect with it and to keep in view that 'May I behold in thee everything realized. Thou art indeed the tabernacle, the mercy-seat, the ark, the covering, the door, the curtains, the all in all. How richly furnished, how full and satisfying, how completely suited to all my wants in this wilderness state!
